Values and Olympic ideals: A case-study on undergraduate students of Physical Education and Sport at the Universidade Lusofóna de Humanidades e Tecnologias

Nowadays, society tends to question traditional values and classic ideologies. Traditional socialization agencies have lost some influence and relevance. Sport as a social phenomenon with great political and economic impact does not live apart from the problems that affect and characterize our Society. Its excessive commercialization and politization have emphasize the progressive degradation of the classic moral, ethical and educational values of sport. According to our knowledge, there are no studies in Portugal on Education and Ethical Values in Sport and Olympism. The objective of the study is to determine the knowledge and perception regarding Olympism and Olympic values in university students of Physical Education and Sport and other areas of knowledge, specifically on the following topics: the human values of Olympism; the social virtues of Olympism; the individual pursuit of excellence. Participants in this part of the study will be students of the undergraduation in Physical Education and Sport at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias. To measure knowledge and perception of Olympic values the international questionnaire on “The Olympic Ideal for Young People in Europe” will be used. Given the current Covid-19 context, this survey was adapted to the Google Forms format and will consist of both closed and open questions. It presents good and very good metric values of internal consistency, specifically 0.89 for the social virtues of Olympism, 0.83 for the human values of Olympism and the individual pursuit of excellence and 0.72 for the personal profit of professionalism. The results that will be presented in the International Conference on Physical Education and Sport Science refer to the first preliminary results arising from an application phase that will be made between the months of December 2020 and January 2021.
