Resumo
COVID-19's pandemic represents a threat to humanity, as the new virus is affecting more than two hundred countries and the number of infected people and deaths is continuously increasing. This situation is not new in history because mankind has often faced devastating plagues. However, the current pandemic represents a new challenge because it occurs in a globalized world, a kind of global village, where it is not possible to live in an almost hermetically sealed box, even when the governments decide to close the borders. This chapter proves that the consequences of COVID-19's pandemic need to be analyzed not only in the economic and social fields, but also in the political life, as the traditional concept of representative democracy already sounds inappropriate to frame the relationship between power and citizenship, due to emerging non-electoral forms of representation in the intermediate space or in the public sphere. The goal is to show that the pandemic will force us to accept that the time for deliberative democracy, fulfilling political equality and deliberation, has arrived.
