Resumo
This paper contributes to a critical analysis of the political and citizenship issues around “the Child” and, overall, of youth, by summarizing how the Child has been construed as a ‘natural’, white, heterossexual, patriarcal and classista body. This summary stems from the work of several queer and feminist authors, and their joint work demonstrates how this concept has been historically mobilized to support white, high-class, heteropatriarchy, and how this discursive order continues to be redeployed by liberal feminism and mainstream LGBT movements. The paper ends on resistance: from Edelman’s critique and the re-readings by Stockton of several famous works of art, I intend to demonstrate how the Child can be seen as growing sideways, and how this process is fundamental to the dissolution of discriminatory systems of citizenship that naturalize relationships of domination and objectification against certain bodies, considered to be dissident, with an ‘orthopedically’ incorrect growth. Keywords: Child, queer, feminism, citizenship, ageism.
