Resumo
The leadership competence development in the Portuguese Military academy is a strategic area for the training of future commanders and leaders. The aim of this research is to evaluate the evolution of the level of proficiency of leadership skills on student cadets over the school years. To achieve the objectives, the researchers adopted a quantitative method using a questionnaire of leadership competences. The questionnaire was applied to 117 students of the Portuguese Military Academy (Case study) at two different times (longitudinal study). From the results it is concluded that the curricular programs of the Portuguese Military Academy develop the level of proficiency of all leadership skills under study, with emphasis on: Technical and professional skills; Ability to solve problems; Develop others; Participatory leadership; Leadership by delegation; Recognition and positive feedback; Decision making; Orientation for human relations; Self-confidence; and transparency. The best ranked students see significantly different proficiency levels in the following competencies: Technical and professional skills; Assertiveness; Self-control; Determination and perseverance; Influence by example.
