Resumo
The companies are looking for strategies to improve their relationships with customers and increase their market share with the main objective of obtaining economic benefits. Cleaner Production (CP) practices allow companies to save money through preventive actions in relation to environmental problems. Brazilian companies are under pressure to reduce electricity consumption, otherwise they will pay much more expensive bills or even be without supply in times of greatest need. This research aims to analyze the economic and environmental benefits through the application of CP practices, a case study was developed in an aeronautical engine overhaul workshop and intends to reduce the electricity consumption by replacing lamps and better use of natural light. The results showed that it was possible reduce the annual electricity consumption by 3,744 kWh and save 2,233 USD per year, therefore, the calculations found the return on investment (ROI) would be in 2.63 years. However, through the Mass Intensity Factor tool, it was possible to calculate the environmental gains in relation to the avoided environmental impacts due to not using the amount of electricity saved, these gains were approximately 258,000 kWh per year. Although the calculation of the ROI supported the decision making of the company executives, it drew the attention of everyone involved in the project that the environmental gains were 68 times greater than the economic gains.
