Resumo
The present investigation aims to analyze the effects and consequences of management shifts resulting from New Public Management permeating the discourse of excellence in higher education. The analysis perspective is inspired by Michel Foucault's approach. A descriptive qualitative case study was conducted. Hence, 36 academics were interviewed, with the data collected being treated through discourse analysis. As an example of this effect, the research findings demonstrate the demand for productivity, which leads the academic to self-regulation and self-discipline, bearing in mind that these competencies respond to mechanisms of registration, evaluation and classification, which are factors that exercise power over teaching, they lead to individualization - the fabrication of individuals.
