The present study aims to characterize the experiences of indirect victimization in
childhood, the experiences of violence (victimization and perpetuation) in prison´s context,
the psychological condition of prisoners, men and women and to analyse whether these
variables are interrelated or not. For this purpose a sample of 394 participants in situation
of imprisonment in several Prison Establishments in the North was collected. In this study
a sociodemographic and criminal questionnaire, the Childhood Adversity History
Questionnaire (ACE) and the Inventory of Psychopathological Symptoms (BSI) were used
as tools. The results showed that 130 prisoners referred having separated or divorced
parents, 119 experienced some type of domestic violence, 84 lived with someone who had
problems with substance, 84 reported having lived with someone who committed suicide,
tried suicide or had some mental disturbance and 106 of the participants had a family
member who had been arrested. Concerning the experiences of violence in prison´s
context, 97 of the prisoners reported having already suffered some type of violence, while
68 admitted having already practiced some type of violence in the Prison´s Establishment.
We can see that the participants who reported having suffered some type of violence in
Prison have higher levels of Adversity in Childhood compared to the participants who did
not suffer any type of violence. The same applies to participants who reported having
committed some type of violence in Prison.
