Abstract

Clinical psychology has been benefiting from recent knowledge, derived from transdiagnostic approaches to mental health problems, which propose new ways of thinking, and alternative conceptualizations, to the traditional diagnostic approach. The present study is based on this perspective, and on the concept of perfectionism as a transdiagnostic factor, to analyze the mediation of the worry between perfectionism and emotional distress. In a non-clinical sample of 669 participants, aged between 18 and 75 years old, it was examined the impact of the mediating effect of worry between the two dimensions of perfectionism and the three dimensions of emotional distress, consisting of conspicuous emotional states in a variety of psychological disorders: states of depression, anxiety and stress. In the analysis of collected data, the macro Process and the bootstrap technique was used to calculate the confidence intervals of the indirect effect. The results confirmed the mediating role of worry, and that the impact of this mediating effect is different in the two dimensions of perfectionism, with evaluative concerns having a stronger relationship with emotional maladjustment than achievement striving.
