Abstract

In the troubled times we are living concerning professional matters, job satisfaction is undoubtedly a highly topical subject. In this context arises the need to identify the job satisfaction of the Nurses regarding five different dimensions in study: salary, superiors, coworkers, promotion and nature of work, as well as, to identify the locus of their own personal characteristics; in other words, how can an individual feel that he has control on what happens to himself. We also have made a socio-demographic and professional characterization of the sample, which was focused on a hospital of the Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental E.P.E., based on a questionnaire given to 249 nurses of that institution. A descriptive and correlational methodology was used after defining the general goal: to know the level of job satisfaction of the Nurses. As specific goals: to know the socio-demographic and professional characteristics of the nurses involved in the study; identify, concerning the five dimensions of the work, which one causes higher job satisfaction / dissatisfaction; identify the personal characteristics (locus of control) that influenced the professional motivation of the nurses; to correlate the motivational locus of control of the nurses in relation to the job satisfaction level. The questionnaire used as a tool to collect the data, highlighted the following conclusions: the majority of the participants are female within an age group between the twenty and thirty years old; the satisfaction with the co-workers is, among the five dimensions considered, the one that leads to a greater satisfaction; the personal trait (locus of control) that characterizes most of the nurses in this study is namely Internality; only one positive correlation is found considering the 5 dimensions - the co-workers / nature of the work. Note that: satisfaction with co-workers does not depend on gender, reliance on training does exist and the locus of control is independent of marital status and number of working hours.
