This study aimed produce a systematic review of the literature on the effectiveness of
cognitive stimulation in the context of healthy and pathological aging. Under these criteria,
articles relevant to the topic were identified and selected, and 11 articles were found that met
the inclusion parameters for this review: articles with participants over 60 years of age, articles
in English about the chosen subject, published in the last 10 years and studies with participants
diagnosed with Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) within the mild and moderate subtype.
Senescence are changes resulting from the physiological processes of aging that do not
constitute diseases, while senility is a complement of senescence in aging, but which,
throughout aging, pathophysiological mechanisms occur, resulting in chronic diseases.
About the 11 articles analyzed, they proved positive effects of cognitive stimulation
and improvement in the participants' quality of life. The stimulation program was effective for
cognitive and emotional functioning, as well for minimizing the progression of
behavioral/neuropsychiatric symptoms in participants with dementia.
Despite the few number of studies in this area, the verified cognitive stimulation
programs proved to be positive for the cognition and social well-being of the individual in the
stage of active and pathological aging.
