Psychosis are psychopathologies that affect all life spheres of the subject and therefore are consider severe. One of the most compromised areas is the capacity for emotional recognition, either though facial expression or voice, understanding them is essential to a successful development of interpersonal relationships and are facilitators of the process of the reintegration of the individual in an active social environment.
This research aimed to study the ability to recognize emotions in a population with schizophrenia or other psychosis and thus to understand wich of the areas is most affected (visual or auditory). It was also investigated if the time of illness and the time of permanence in a rehabilitation institution influences this domain of the social cognition.
There were used instruments that alow the evaluation of this component in two diffent ways, for visual stimuli (phographs) was used the Radbound Database of Langner et al. (2011) and for the auditory stimuli were used a Set of Portuguese Phrases for the investigation of the emotional Prosody of Castro & Lima (2010).
It was concluded that the identification of emotions though facial expressions obtained better result against prosody, underlining the difficulty in indentifying negative emotions in both areas and a greater ease in identifying positive emotions. The time of diagnosis did not prove to be a significant factor in the ability of recognize emotions, however there was a worst performance in Disgust and Fear emotions. The time spent in a rehabilitation structure did not seem to influence this domain but the Surprise emotion proved to be more difficult to identify in individuals that were in a longer process of rehabilitation.
Therefore it is imperative to consider the need to implement programs with specific focus on the task of emotional recognition that assist the individual with psychosis in the development of this competence since it has a strong impact on the adequacy of their daily interactions.
