The theme of this investigation is the enrichment of the visual culture, in the realm of
the european art history, by means of an pictoric intervention in the school environment.
This teaching experiment, conducted in the Visual Education discipline, with a 8th
grade class, was conducted in the context of the supervisioned practice, in the scope of the
master’s degree in Teaching of Visual Arts in the ULHT, during the scolar year of 2017/2018,
at the Agrupamento de Escolas de Castro Marim.
Working on a peripheral geographic context, with a group of teenagers between 13
and 17 years old, of a clear cultural diversity, this action research was directed to an increase
of knowledge the western art tradition, witch where not familiar to them.
To the project, which consisted in the painting of the school playground benches,
some fractions of the work methodology were used, in order to develop in the students the
capacity of the critical thinking and problem solving, convicted that this learning experience
exceeds the scope of this discipline, to develop the personality of each one of the students.
In this process two important thematic units were also approached: color and image,
aiming to develop skills in painting and visual culture areas. Methodologically, this dissertation stems from an action research process.
