Abstract

Environmental education has been configured in a process of education that disseminates a new behavioral culture, a more responsible attitude of man towards his natural environment. Its application in the middle school classroom seems to make the educational process much more oriented towards a citizen conscience. The aim of the present study was to analyze the environmental education practices of teachers of public high schools, in public schools of Exu, State of Pernambuco. It was an exploratory and descriptive field study that used a questionnaire to collect information. The sample consisted of 15 teachers of both sexes. The results showed the term environmental education associated to: Practical action (29.8%), Justification (53.2%) and Associated values (17.0%). That the contents are being passed on in the form of projects (53.3%), although 100% consider the inclusion of environmental education important in daily activities. The didactic strategies were diversified: Debates, music, lectures, tours, videos, drawings, collection and separation of garbage, theater, booklets and educational panels. The effective initiatives in terms of behavior change of the students still did not seem to the teachers, even enough. It was concluded that environmental education still represents a political and pedagogical challenge in the schools of Exu city.
