This research aims to analyze what contributed to school admission and the reasons for the recurrent school dropout of youngsters from Projovem Urbano in the city of Linhares, Espírito Santo. Therefore, based on a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 15 students who had dropped out of Projovem Urbano in Linhares, Espírito Santo. The results revealed a scenario with discontinuous school trajectories, since they were interrupted by the need to work, a reason cited by students as the main reason for dropping out of school before and after joining the Projovem Urbano. In addition to work, other reasons were mentioned by the interviewees that in their view were decisive, such as the need to live in another neighborhood, prohibition from the partner to continue with the course, the long workload of the course, as well as, lack of motivation, separation from their partners, private problems, distant and dangerous travel, and parenthood. On the reasons for going back to school, the interviewees mentioned the completion of elementary school, professional qualification, the opportunity to get a better job and the opportunity to learn and acquire knowledge. In summary, the study showed that dropping out of school reveals inequalities and uncertainties experienced by young people, considering that they are excluded from the teaching and learning process due to their living conditions, which deprive them of the opportunity to ascend socially.
