Abstract

Aging is a reality that does not always occur naturally or senescent (without disease), where the family often finds difficulty in dealing with the senile process (disease), culminating in a worn and dispensable relationship, where the institutionalization is presented as the solution. From this problem, we sought to analyze the educational contributions of nurses facing families in preventing cutting of ties with the institutionalized elderly. To meet the objectives of the research were collected from 06 nurses and 06 institutionalized elderly, and their families. This was a descriptive research with a qualitative analysis, which was to better understand the phenomenon and its characteristics. The procedures used were semistructured interviews and documentary analysis. The theoretical framework received contributions Papaléo Netto (2006), Alcantara (2009), Freitas et al (2006) among other researchers, confirming the understanding of the concepts of aging (process), age (life stage) and old or older (final) result. The study provides pertinent contributions to the educational context, in order to create opportunities triggering think about the elderly not only for students of health and education, but for families. The aging is real and belongs to the life cycle is considered as a continuous and permanent process. It was evident that the lack of physical infrastructure, qualified multidisciplinary team and the lack of effective family participation and society in relation to care for the elderly are challenges for professionals who deal with subjects in this stage of life.
