The use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances is increasingly clear between the university population.
The objective of this study is to identify: the prevalence of consumption and the motives associated with the use of alcohol and other psychoactive substances among college students of the first study cycle at Universidade Lusófona do Porto (ULP).
This study involved one hundred and ninety-six (196) college students of different nationalities, with 52,55% female and 47,45% male with a mean age 24,27 years, which responded to the survey, allowing assessment of several issues related to experience with psychoactive substances.
The results showed that 60,20% of respondents had experienced some type of drug, and that the main drug used for the first time, was alcohol (63,56 %), followed by cannabis (31,36%). Within the context of use, it was also noted that mainly the first experiment took place still at the School (62.71%).
One hundred and eighteen (118) respondents reported having experienced some kind of drugs, out of this, 53,39% take drugs today. It was also checked for the presence of cannabis consumption and alcohol (47,62% and 46,03% respectively), these drugs are consumed on a daily and weekly basis (58,73% and 31,75%). Pleasure (23,81%) and entertainment (20,63%) are the main reasons identified for this use .
It was found that only a third of the respondents suspended at least once, drug consumption (33,33%). These are troubling figures because even having existed situations that put at risk their lives (12,70%), mainly responses confirm that the cessation of consumption wasn´t considered as option (60,32%).
