Abstract

This work aims to investigate the role of the teacher in the construction of students' conceptions of the 1st and 3rd year of high school, about concepts of biology in the context of interdisciplinary and scientific literacy. It was a search of information among high school students from public school, as well as two private schools located in the city of Barreiros, the southern coast of Pernambuco. The research used was qualitative and quantitative in state and private schools in the town of Barreiros - PE. The speech of the majority of teachers interviewed reflects the current situation of education in Pernambuco, in particular - Barreiros, which emerges structural and pedagogical difficulties in schools. Considering the complexity of teaching of biology, and the lack of existing schools and teaching physical structures as well as deficiency in initial teacher training. To seek information about the students' prior knowledge of the 1st and 3rd years, apply a pre-test aimed to find out what their knowledge about the concepts of biology, having as central theme, the contents of cytology and histology for 1st year students and genetics and ecology to the students of the 3rd year. It was done an interview with teachers of the involved schools. The theoretical basis has listed into three categories: Scientific literacy, interdisciplinary and training of teachers.
