In the aging process, changes in perception and cognition can generate losses in the
recognition of facial emotion expressions. Difficulties in these áreas can lead to
impaired social competence, social functioning, as well as decreased quality of life.
Given the relevance and pertinence of the theme, in the present work, a systematic
review of the literature was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines in order to
understand the age-related differences in emotional recognition in the elderly normative
population. For this purpose, three databases were searched, Pubmed, Web of Science
and Scopus, with 37 articles published between 2010 and 2020 being selected. The
results show that the elderly show a decline in the recognition of emotional expressions,
mainly for negative emotions, while they more accurately recognize positive emotions.
These results can be explained by the structural theory and the theory of socioemotional
selectivity. On the other hand, age differences in the tasks of emotional recognition are
more prominent when using static rather than dynamic stimuli that are quite effective
due to the ability to minimize the degree of difficulty of the elderly in the task of
emotional identification.
