More and more couples are diagnosed with infertility, which can cause changes
at various levels in an individual's life, such as at the personal, marital, sexual,
social, family and even occupational levels. In addition to this impact, the
emergence of the pandemic context by COVID-19 implied the closure of clinics that
carry out medically assisted procreation treatments (PMA), so these couples were
forced to postpone the possible implementation of their parental project.
The main objective of this study was to understand how infertile women dealt
emotionally with the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This was a quantitative, with had a sample of 100 infertile women, undergoing
ART treatment between 2020 to 2022. Participants answered an online questionnaire
shared on blogs and social networks related to infertility. The participants were
evaluated through a set of self-response questionnaires on the experience of
infertility, the assessment of the pandemic and its consequences for treatments, the
evaluation of social support, and the coping strategies used to deal with infertility at
this stage.
It was identified that most women reveal a great desire to become pregnant and
that it affects their life in general. Most women rated the closure of clinics and
postponement of treatments negatively, and expressed predominantly negative
emotions, despite equal high hope.
This study contributed to a better understanding of the impact of COVID-19 and
it’s consequences on the emotional adaptation of women and couples.
