Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

The goal of the thesis is to identify what kinds of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations are guiding students to enter the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and simultaneously know which different types of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations are more valued by university students to apply for higher education, namely, gender, way of access to HE and training area. The questionnaire Academic Motivation Scale developed by Vallerand, Blais, Brière & Senecal Vallieres (1989) - higher education version - was used to fulfil the proposed goals. The questionnaire was translated into Portuguese by Sobral (2003), using proper procedures for cross-cultural translation and presents an average value of the indexes (alpha) of internal consistency of the various subscales of 0,78. 137 university students attending the first year at the Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias participated in this study. The questionnaire results show that the intrinsic motivation to learn is the most valued by students at ULHT. The same results were achieved regarding gender, way of access to the HE and training area.
