Reading and Comprehension is a study which purpose is to help understand whether the
activation of cognitive semantics processes may lead to the improvement of the
comprehension, when we use silent reading and other strategies. We select two groups of 9th
grade. One worked as a control group, the other as an experimental group. After both groups
have done two reading comprehension exercises, the experimental group practised reading
strategies as well as reading comprehension exercises, for ten weeks, during the second and
third terms of 2008/2009 school year. The control group accomplished the comprehension
exercises at the same time as the experimental group, without practising any reading
strategies.
The analysis of the results tells us that the students of the experimental group show great
improvement after being submitted to a dual route reading exercises, in what concerns the
activation of the semantic component.
