Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

Heterotopia is an important concept introduced by Michel Foucault and that has been gaining relevance in architecture and urban design. This dissertation proposes to analyze the Belém Cultural Center in the light of this concept, trying to perceive the way in which, as an architectural device, it transmits to the visitors different sensations through the drawn routes, the way it begets behaviors or how it induces the duration of the permanence in spaces. We propose, therefore, to think about the public use of the private space from three areas of public use within the Centro Cultural de Belém. The José Saramago Way, the CCB Square and the Jardim das Oliveiras. Regarding methodological questions, the analysis of this equipment followed two axes: a more theoretical one, exploring the concepts of apparatus, heterotopias and public space, and a more practical one, anchored to anthropological precepts such as direct observation, and which proved useful in the description of the discursive and non-discursive practices that the building installs.
