Abstract

The promotion of positive parenting has been one of the focuses of psychological interventions in recent times, fundamentally due to the influence it has on the adaptation of children and young people to an increasingly demanding society. Família + is a pilot training program for parental skills developed at the Center for Family Support and Parental Counseling (CAFAP) "Entre Famílias", at the Centro Comunitário de Esmoriz. Individual and group sessions were held with progenitors unemployed and accompanied by this service, supported by a parental coaching approach, aimed at the transformation and positive management of family relationships. To evaluate the effects of the program, the Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostrane Scales for Parents (EMBU-P) and for Children (EMBU-C) scales were used in the Portuguese versions of Canavarro & Pereira (2007), before and after the sessions, evaluating the parents' perception of their own educational parenting styles, but also the perception that their children have about the parental educational styles of their parents. After 3 months of the end of the sessions and through a Semi- Structured Interview, we evaluate the effects of Família + on the dynamics of these families. The results show that the changes most felt and expressed by the parents will have been on a personal level, a change of perspective as women and mothers, feeling more capable and valued by themselves, managing conflicts and tasks more effectively, increasing physical and affective availability and improving communication between the elements of the family, through the exchange of affections and the reduction of hostility and verbal aggression. These changes culminated in the change in some educational practices, however, an area in which the results do not seem to be so significant. The continuity of the program will be an added value for these families, both for the motivation and interest shown, but also by the need to deepen some themes, clarifying content and reinforcing essential skills in reducing psychosocial risk.
