This thesis has as object of research the teaching of literature in High School given the way this is being done in the school, considering the reformulation of this stage of education by the LDBEN from 1996 and the results of the latest official research and evaluation on reading. From a historical retrospective from the colonial period to the PCN’s was possible to see the roots of education prevalent today historiographical and philosophical principles and know the curriculum that began to guide the teaching of literature after the reformulation of High School with its shortcomings and incongruities. In a second step the study focused on the literature literacy from Cosson’s conception and explored the literary teaching and teacher’s education. Then it was emphasized the teaching of literature in the age of new technologies of information and communication and the Bordini and Aguiar’s Recepcional method as an alternative to the literature literacy. The objective of this search is therefore to evaluate the teaching of literature in High School, considering the formative and emancipatory character of literary reading, by verification the teaching in relation to literary reading in the perspective of students of Languages Course graduates from High School. For this it was conducted a field survey of quantitative and qualitative informants as having 120 students from Graduation Cariri Regional University (URCA). The results obtained after analysis of data show that the practice of teachers do not contribute to the student literature literacy as they continue focusing on teaching on a historicist character, in which the central object of literature classes is no longer the literary text to be a didactic discourse on literature. The conclusion is that the teaching of this discipline in High School has not achieved its key objective of forming competent readers and consolidate literary reading habits, which points to the need to review this school practice, as well as redefine the role of teaching literature in the discipline of Portuguese Language.
