The dissertation presented hereon is a study referring to the teaching of the Portuguese language in fundamental education in public schools in Santa Luz, Piauí, Brazil. The aim
of the research was to identify the limits and challenges faced by teachers of the Portuguese language of the final years of the fundamental series, and to present some
discussion about the present context of language teaching offered to students of Brazilian
public schools. The study points towards the need for greater improvement of theoretic and methodological methods of teaching undertaken by the teacher, as well as towards
conceptions of language use and of learning, which refers directly towards teacher education, be it in its initial phase, or continuing teacher training. The empirical work was carried out with teachers of the Portuguese language subject, of the final year students of the fundamental education series, in the Santa Luz municipality, in the State of Piauí,
with 8th year series students of the referred to schools of the public area and municipality and it also intended to identify the more common limits faced by teachers of the
Portuguese language and which were the greater challenges hereon for them. It also intended to substantiate with the students how do they understand and receive the
teaching provided them for Portuguese language.
