Abstract

This dissertation had as main guideline to perceive the extent to which education becomes effective as public policy, being capable of helping tackle crime. Such a confrontation occurs by two distinct biases; The first one has a more preventative feature, so that education has focused its activities on crime prevention, while the second bias is to prevent recidivism by applying educational policies to convicted people In this research work it was conducted a brief literature review, covering some theoretical authors who emphasized how the acquisition and development of knowledge happens in the subject, among which included: Descartes, Rousseau, Kant, besides Piaget and Vygotsky. The survey consisted of surveying in the cases decided by the district of Joao Pessoa grand jury in 2011 in order to check the level of education of the defendants, as well as at the Prison with a view to surveys on criminal recidivism. The survey results showed that it is latent effectiveness of education as a public policy to combat crime. It was also found that it would have a huge financial saving if we had a higher concentration of educational investments rather than investments in public safety
