Background: The increase in deportations over the years has had adverse effects on immigrant families, communities, and countries of origin. Despite the recognition of the negative consequences of deportation, special attention has yet to be identified in the study of deportees, namely in terms of their psychological adjustment and social reintegration.
Method: The methodology used was a systematic review, following the guidelines of PRISMA. The research was carried out in 6 electronic databases and the data collection process took place in 5 stages, by two independent researchers.
Objective: Elaborate a systematic review of the literature on the impact of deportation on the psychological adjustment and social reintegration of deported individuals, in order to draw attention to the phenomenon by the scientific community and society in general and to raise awareness of the need to develop measures that promote the adjustment and reintegration of these subjects.
Results: 6 publications were included in this systematic review, 2 quantitative and 4 qualitative studies. The studies show that being deported is a reason to be discriminated against, victimized and stigmatized, and that deportees face challenges in terms of their mental health, underlining the need for intervention.
Conclusion: It was found that there is still a lack of studies that specifically focus on the impact of deportation on the psychological adjustment and social reintegration of the deported, which reveals the invisibility of the phenomenon, both in social terms and on the part of the scientific community. However, there is a consense that the deportation experience may compromise the mental health of the deportees, with psychological disorders such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress and depression being observed more frequently by the participants in the various studies.
