Statistical projections show that the increase of the elderly population in Brazil will increase from 7,3% to around 15% in 2025. Based on these data, there is a concern facing this segment in all areas of knowledge. Aging is a complex process and irreversible, in which the elderly becomes increasingly dependent, losing their autonomy. Recent literature has emphasized that we must not underestimate old age. It is therefore important to know reality, the lifestyle and culture of the people at this stage of the life cycle. From this aspect, the research aims at analyzing the contribution of the program Roots ofLife Federal Institute of Education Science and Technology of Ceará (IFCE), the city of Fortaleza, and its relevance as a means of rescuing the independence of older people. Methodologically, the research is as descriptive and exploratory whose commitmentis to seek answers based on scientific knowledge. The work in question is classified as bibliographic and field. For purposes of our analysis, we selected only the elderly participants of fitness and bodybuilding activities, comprising a total population of 128 subjects. From gym class, 120 patients were interviewed, corresponding to 50%, weight class, eight seniors were interviewed, corresponding to 13.3%. The subjects are of both sexes and comprise an age range of 60 to 89 years. Data collection was conducted in a qualitative and quantitative means of questionnaire and interviews applied in the period May to October 2012. The study characterizes the Roots of Life Program, conducted by the Federal Institute of Science and Technological Education of Ceará (IFCE) in Fortaleza, like a work of great social relevance and that assumes an ethical and community with the elderly of their surroundings, highlighting the importance of education that is as an instrument of change and improvement in social relations seeking to restore autonomy. Through participation in physical activity programs, participants seek, through this new way of life, breaking the paradigms of contemporary society. We highlight the importance of extension work facing the elderly participant in social programs, which have greater opportunity to maintain their independence and manage their lives according to their own values, contributing so essential to your wellbeing.
