Abstract

In mankind's long history, it has been established that social differences have created difficulties in humanity's urban and social fabric. Many researchers believe these social differences can and should be reduced to less alarming numbers through the educational process. In this thesis, we propose to study the Santa Mônica School, Bonsuccesso unit, founded in 1937. It is located near the Alemão, Jacaré, and Maré complexes, whose occupants have been fighting an urban and social war that has influenced the education of the young residents, both inside and outside these dichotomous groups. These paradoxes are common in contemporary daily life, but require creative, concrete, and efficient solutions that liberate youth from the cultural and social bondage imposed on the way they live. The research utilizes documents, images, and data obtained from newspapers, firsthand accounts, and agendas from the institution as the primary sources. The results obtained indicate that the guiding principles of competent management and quality training of human beings in academics and athletics facilitated entrance into high quality universities as seen by the predominate factors and leaders in the educational field, tracked for and by the individuals that experienced this anthropologic dichotomy in Rio de Janeiro.
