In Portugal and around the world, demographic aging is a reality and is expected to continue to increase, together with various other statistical data that demonstrate the aging of the population in general. It is estimated that the number of people aged 60 and over globally exceeds 962 million people, a significant amount of the world's global population.
Aging is inevitably associated with dealing with one or more chronic illnesses, loss of functional capacity and often dependence. These characteristics are preponderantly influenced by genetic variations, by the lifestyle adopted individually and the environment in which each person lives.
In this sense, the search for healthy aging has been seen as a goal, to proactively impact on well-being throughout aging, adapting to aging in a way that everyone feels acceptable.
There are several determinants that influence healthy aging, some, such as physical activity, mental health, cognitive activity, good nutrition and social commitment, which are examples of social determinants of health, are increasingly taken into account in order to promote a better lifestyle.
Well-being is a subjective experience, what is most important for one person may be different for another. Typically, well-being can be measured using self-report surveys or standardized questionaires. These tools can be used to track changes in well-being over time.
Within the scope of this study, an observational cross-sectional study was carried out, based on a questionnaire, aiming to measure the subjective well-being of a population of a Shopping Center in Olivais (Lisbon), and compareing the level of well-being of the population that attends the Shopping and the population that frequents Farmácia Fernandes Borges (which is located in the same Shopping Centre), with the aim of identifying differences in terms of well-being between populations with different prevalence of chronic diseases.
