Mammary gland tumours are often observed in the practice of veterinary clinics, being locally invasive and highly metastatic. Because of its high metastatic potential, patients are often treated with adjuvant doxorubicin-based chemotherapy, although there is little data to evaluate the effect of this strategy.
With the present work, we aimed to assess whether the adjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin or adjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin and rescue protocol further improves survival in female cats mammary tumors when compared to those who only underwent surgery.
Between January 2008 and December 2013, medical records from 82 female cats with mammary neoplasia, seen at two reference veterinary hospitals – Centro Veterinário Berna, in Lisbon, and Hospital Clínic Veterinari de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – were reviewed.
Of the 82 cats observed, 43 were in the control group, 31 still underwent adjuvant chemotherapy with doxorubicin and seven were further subjected to a rescue protocol. The median survival time of these groups was 1030, 1238 and 1033 days, respectively. However, these results did not show statistical relevance.
The results obtained did not show a benefit in the adjuvant chemotherapy or rescue protocol when compared to surgery.
