Abstract

Visual communication of science is fundamental for the acquisition and transfer of knowledge among researchers. At the moment one of the visual supports most used for the sharing of information is the scientific posters in physical or digital format. The dissemination of knowledge through posters has shown a constant growth over the last decades and is now the most used support in the dissemination of information in scientific conferences. For an assertive communication we defend that the composition of the scientific poster must respect the principles of graphic design. In this study we evaluated a sample of 120 posters from Portuguese scientific institutions to characterize the presence or absence of visual communication fundamentals. After a research phase in which the design principles essential to the production of scientific posters are presented, we verified the presence of these elementary signs to an effective visual communication, being verified the existence of weaknesses and deficiencies in the visual composition. This research intends to demonstrate that it is essential to increase the visual culture in the scientific community through the sharing of knowledge among researchers and graphic designers, promoting the development of assertive and appealing visual communication contents of science structured in elementary principles of design.
