“Learning English as a second language – The importance of dominating other
languages in a global world” is a research paper on the importance of learning English on the
Junior-High students’ perspective in the global world we live in.
The methodology chosen was the descriptive kind. The subjects for this research are
101 students from the 9th grade (Junior-High), from Colégio Vasco da Gama, a total of five
classes.
In order to have students’ opinions, were elaborated inquiries organized according
with the investigation’s objectives. The inquiries were applied during class with authorization
from the school direction.
We intend to determine whether, in accordance with European legislation that
enhances the learning of several languages as a way of bringing together the different
European Union countries, including a lingua franca which can be the preferred means of
communication in the political, economic, social and cultural world, learners value the
acquisition of foreign language and if this is proved, what the roles and goals that students
intend to achieve through fluency in the English language.
Regarding the results, we can say that students valorize the mastery in other
languages in a globalized world, particularly the dominance of the English language as it is
considered the international lingua franca that allows the communication between people
with different mother tongues. The cultural enrichment and the development of creativity are
also factors identified by students as important consequences of other languages’
acquisition.
