Abstract

The use of non financial resources as municipal support for artistic creation increases stability in times of crisis that funding from the annual budgets management does not guarantee. Plastic and Visual Arts require working conditions which are not in the spaces normally used in large cities, but the specific typology of «art studio» offers. Plastic Arts Centre of «Palácio dos Coruchéus» is the first centre of art studios across the country, built during the Estado Novo, with public funds and inserted into a cultural complex whose valences remain unchanged after more than 40 years of activity. Being a cultural reference’s equipment of Lisboa, CAPPC raised several controversies over the past decades relating to the management model and the relational breakdown between users and CML. The perception of old municipal cultural leaders about CAPPC lets establish some causes for a dissonance between equipment management and changes in visual arts and their needs, also highlighting the importance of art studios as a way to support the creation in the visual arts today.
