Small animal enteritis in companion animals is a common pathology seen in small animal practice, it is characterized by local or general inflammation of the wall of the small intestine. The main clinical signs that are reported by the owners are vomiting and diarrhea.
Since there are a variety of causes, the definitive diagnosis requires several exams, which can
be hard to obtain. Not all causes need the same exams, however, in most of the cases performing
radiographs and ultrasounds is highly recommended. Regarding treatment, it depends on the underlying cause, but in some cases is mostly used to reverse the symptoms. The prognosis depends on the primary etiology, the response of treatment and the course of the pathology.
The present dissertation aims to review the latest literature regarding enteritis in small animals in order to relate the symptoms and the exams described in the literature along with the findings observed in the cases described later in this dissertation.
