Abstract

The aim of this investigation is to see how the creation, development, understanding and public presentation of a virtual museological installation may contribute to strengthen self-esteem and to the process of building the identity of a group of adolescents. In this context, the importance of the students’ visual culture is recognized through the approach of personal objects and stories that have music as the main reference. Being a crucial and unifying element for this group of adolescents, music allows them to understand their past more clearly, to identify with larger groups, to affirm themselves before the others and to face present time with security and confidence. The pedagogical experience was done while teaching a mostly technological and practical school subject - Design with computer aid /assistance – to the second year of the professional course of Interior and Exterior Design Technician. Besides the acquisition of technical and technological skills inherent to the subject curriculum, there was the intention of providing the students a self-discovery and identity affirmation path. The investigation was made at the Escola Profissional de Recuperação do Património de Sintra with a group of twelve students aged between 16 and 21 years old, during the 2012/2013 school year. The methodological approach is qualitative and the investigation is structured on a study case. The virtual museological installation project contributed positively to the valorization of self-esteem and identity formation, since have been positive changes in the behavior of this student group.
