Abstract

The Society of Jesus has established itself in Brazil since the early period of colonization, and it has taken part in country’s life mainly by its role in the educational field focusing on a method that mixes humanistic studies with scientific ones. Throughout all this period whose beginning dates back from the colonial times, this institution has made use of an education that emphasizes the importance of catechization and evangelization, upon which rules a specific method of learning, known as Ratio Studiorum. In this manner, the present work has the following subject-matter: The Jesuit Education in the Colégio São Francisco de Sales, Diocesano, Teresina-PI: analysis of an experience, whose aim is the analysis of the perception of the influence of the Jesuit education in the state of Piauí, particularly in the capital city of Teresina-PI. To achieve this, an empirical study has been carried out, assisted by tools like questionnaires and oral interviews. The individuals of this research were 10 (ten) teachers, 8 (eight) students who are currently in the cited institution and 11 (eleven) former students, who answered a semi-structured questionnaire. In addition to that, documents, newspapers, pictures and reference material have been consulted. Moreover, for the theoretical support of the composition of this work, consecrated authors on the topic of Jesuit education have been used, such as Paiva (1982); Klein (1997); Freyre (2006); Saviani (2008); and Teixeira (2015), among others. The results revealed that the Jesuit education still reverberates in the lives of the pupils of the mentioned institution, which is well-known by its formal education so highly required by Society of Jesus. Even though this still remains, some methodological changes have already been noted, especially in relation to the practice of teaching, considering the extracurricular elements, that is, activities outside of the traditional school space, focusing as well on the aspects of the student’s reality, elements that were disregarded by Jesuits.
