The present study arises from the question: what is the perception that deaf students have about their education and how teachers understand these students, taking into consideration the culture of the deaf? In a bid to a possible solution to this problem, a descriptive study was done, in which 60 deaf students and 10 teachers responded a semi-structured questionnaire, specific to each group.
The overall objective of the study was to analyze confronting the perception of deaf students about their education with in which teachers understand these students considering the culture of the deaf. The main conclusions arrived at are: teachers have not yet fully liberated themselves of the conception that the deaf are sick people, hence not understanding their specific and cultural identities The manner in which a teacher perceives his pupil affects the teaching process that would yield positive results, if the teacher do not understands the formed as " incapable" , negatively do they also understands him ; there is a contradiction between the understanding that the deaf student has of the teacher’s actions intended for the student; there isn’t full understanding of the importance of the sign language in school context. Teachers do not define the means by which they attend to a student; neither do they follow a specific approach or methodology, instead many a times in a confused manner.
Finally, we recommend that actions carried out within educational environment (curriculum, methodological procedures, evaluation, physical structure, etc.) meant for the education of the deaf, should take into consideration the culture and identity of the deaf, valuing primarily the sign language.
