Abstract

Our study proposed to analyze the meanings assigned by the servers that were a part of the Basic Education Program (PEB) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN). Through the reports of servers and managers, it suggests a verification of what impact attending the Basic Education Program had on them, on a personal, social and professional level. It also proposes to verify whether the initial expectations were met. To that purpose, the investigation followed a path of theoretical research via the gathering of opinions among the participants. The theories were grounded on referencials which recognize the efforts made by the EJA, such as the investments and advances that decreased illiteracy in Brazil. In practice, its structure is based on a qualitative, exploratory inductive study, with subjective analysis of 60 servers and 12 managers, using questionnaires with open questions, and on interviews conducted by the researcher. As a result, the research points out that the education of the PEB produced significant meaning to the servers, collective environment and profession, contributing greatly to the exercise of citizenship. As interim reflections, the essay strengthens the EJA, recognizes individuals and promotes educational practice, to clarify concrete school actions, with proposals for new approaches in the field of education.
