Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent cause of dementia and covers about 60%
to 70% of cases of dementia in Western countries. Unfortunately, there are currently no
pharmacological treatments to prevent or cure dementia. For this reason, it is
increasingly necessary to innovate, with regard to therapeutic techniques and strategies
that mitigate the damage. In this context, this work aims to describe how cognitive
stimulation of preserved functions can produce important and neuropsychological
protection effects in the early stages of dementia. When starting a rehabilitation, the
patient is submitted to an integrated work of multicomponents, such as mental aspects
and manipulative tasks, which cause effects perceived in the short and long term after
interventions. However, it appears that the focus of AD intervention may not be related
to rehabilitation, but to the stimulation of preserved capacities, based on brain plasticity.
Methods: This research has a basic purpose, with descriptive objective, with a
qualitative approach, through a theoretical review through the bases Pubmed, Scielo, b On, Web of Science and EBSCO Psycinfo of the university. 11 specific articles on the
subject were selected, following the PRISMA guidelines.
Results: several studies have tested the effectiveness of cognitive stimulation
interventions in the treatment of early-stage AD. A great methodological variety stands
out, capable of stimulating preserved functions in order to compensate for cognitive
decline and thus postpone neurodegenerative symptoms and improve functional
performance in order to contribute to quality of life.
Conclusions: All types of cognitive stimulation intervention have a positive effect on
AD in a mild stage. Although the results are not long-lasting, it is significant to maintain
or improve cognitive functioning, which implies the intensity of training, to prolong the
autonomy of the patient
