Abstract

The study examines and evaluates the psychometric attributes of the ten-item version of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), when applied to a specific professional class in Portugal, social workers. Method:The sample consisted of 1369 social workers practicing in Portugal, with 94.01% being female and an average age of 39.02 years (SD = 8.99). Internal consistency was verified using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient and construct validity was verified using exploratory factor analysis through varimax rotationof PSS-10 main components and confirmatory factor analysis. Results:The PSS-10 version demonstrates satisfactory psychometric properties, proving to be a clear and reliable instrument for measuring the perceived stress levels of social workers in Portugal. The exploratory factor analysis revealed two factors in this study, and the confirmatory factor analysis yielded satisfactory results. Internal consistency showed a value of α = 0.84.Keywords: perceived stress scale; social workers; Portugal
