Abstract
Starting with the several practices the term «digital photography» implies, this article presents some of the characteristics of digital imaging in relation to chemical photography which enable us to think we’re in the presence of a new media. We particulary discuss the indexical feature of chemical photography in which the fundamental of photographic thought was founded over the past 150 years. Under scope is the way in which the new digital era questions this thought in favour of a new kind of prospective and modelling vision. A vision that is free from the burden of captured reality even if it keeps simulating its effect. This is exemplified through the work of photographers such as Nancy Burson and Aziz&Cucher. «Digital photography» turns possible a new poetics, now even more controlled by imagination. It puts together what is more powerful in photography – the capturing of reality – with the main advantage of painting – the creative freedom.
