Abstract

Aggression perpetration can be influenced by our temperament and personality. This study examines the role of self-regulation as a mediator in the relationship between CU traits and proactive (n = 746, 66% males; M = 14.81; SD = 1.79) and reactive aggression (n = 1552, 59.4% males; M = 15.12; SD = 1.80) across two Portuguese community samples. The findings highlight that self-regulation accounts for the association of CU traits with both proactive and reactive aggression. Results suggest that the study of aggression considering personal variables could contribute to the development of preventive interventions, reducing the number of incidents and the recurrence of aggressive behavior within the community.
