Abstract

Introduction: The coup d'état of 25 April 1974 marks the beginning of the third wave of global democratisation, according to Samuel P. Huntington, and is crucial to the end of many authoritarian regimes in Europe. Methodology: The research analyses the impact of the coup and the leading role of the Portuguese military during the Cold War, as well as the tensions between the moderate and radical left currents in the political parties. Results: The Pact between the MFA and the political parties sought to find the basis for the work of the Constituent Assembly, with changes from the I to the II Pact and a distribution of powers that was only finalised with the I Constitutional Revision in 1982. Discussion and Conclusions: The study reveals how the relationship between the military and the political parties was influenced by internal tensions and how the constitutional process evolved, culminating in the first constitutional revision that consolidated the new political system.
