Abstract

Life in democratic societies is difficult, not only because of the complexity of human relations, or the heterogeneity of students/leaners, but mainly because of systematic conflictuality. This environment of tension cannot be seen as a lost cause; but should rather be faced in a collective way and as a possible goal. The heterogeneity of school population; the lack of training of teachers (in areas of great present need, like the indiscipline and the insecurity); and the lack of means may lead to a situation of inactivity of school boards described as «a school of silence». In these schools, teachers and students tend to defend from one another, in order to protect themselves, choosing mechanisms that maintain or keep those barriers. Today’s school, a place of knowledge transmission and reproduction of standardized behaviour (as traditional ones), collide with the present world, which is plural and demands an ative participation in the reproduction of received knowledge, empowering us to seek for agreement and to assume a more demanding attitude towards us and others.
