Maria de Lurdes de Sousa Macedo

Lurdes Macedo holds a PhD in Communication Sciences with a specialization in Intercultural Communication from the University of Minho (awarded with a CECS Honourable Mention), having completed a post-doctorate in Communication for Development (C4D) at the same university. During these studies, she spent significant periods of time collaborating in person with Mackenzie University, USP, PUC-SP and UFMG (Brazil), University of Texas at Austin (USA) and Polytechnic University of Maputo and Eduardo Mondlane University (Mozambique). She is currently an integrated researcher at CICANT, Lusófona University, in which she co-coordinates the project "Voices in Network: women's participation in development processes". She is an assistant professor at the Lusófona University, where she has been teaching since 2008. She was an invited assistant at the Escola Superior de Educação de Viseu (2009 - 2012) and an invited assistant professor at the Polytechnic University of Maputo (2016). Her main research interests are under the Cultural Studies scope: intercultural communication, communication and culture for social change, women empowerment and participation, cultural identities, and the Portuguese-speaking cultures. At CECS, Minho University, where she was an integrated researcher from 2006 to 2022, she had integrated the projects "Memories, cultures and identities: how the past weights on the present-day intercultural relations in Mozambique and Portugal?" (2018 - 2022), "The Flow, the Death and the Media Event" (2014 - 2015) and "Identity Narratives and Social Memory: the (re)construction of Lusophony in Intercultural Contexts" (2009 - 2013). So far, she has published several articles in scientific and cultural journals, as well as chapters in books, nationally and internationally, including Craft is Political, edited in 2021 by D. Wood, at Bloomsbury. Lurdes directed 2 short documentaries regarding lusophone painters: "In Malangatana¿s Trail: from legacy to memory" (2018) and "Emmanuel Nassar: 81-18" (2021). She is also an international consultant on Cultural Studies and Communication for Social Change with collaborations in Angola, Bangladesh, Brazil, and Mozambique. In Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, she was the PI of the IOM in 2019 and 2020 working to establish the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre.
