Research interests

Lucia Mesquita is a postdoctoral researcher at The Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies (CICANT), Lusófona University, Portugal, where she is part of the Media Literacy and Civic Cultures Lab (MeLCi Lab). She works on the AI-LITERATE: Upskilling Higher Education in the Age of Generative AI and Disinformation, an ERASMUS+ Cooperation Partnerships in Higher Education grant (2025-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000357941), in which she coordinates WP2 on needs assessment. She is also part of the YouNDigital project (DOI 10.54499/UIDB/05260/2020), led by Professor Maria José Brites, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Lucia coordinates the Lawfare & Journalism Safety project, a two-year initiative funded by the Knight Foundation Chair in Journalism at the University of Kansas, which focuses on legal harassment of journalists. She coordinates the Portuguese team for the U.S. Presidential Election of 2024 project, led by Professor Dr Basyouni Ibrahim Hamada. She is also part of the editorial board of the journal Digital Journalism.  Lucia is a research associate at the Digital Media and Society Observatory (DMSO) at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Brazil, and a former postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Future Media, Democracy, and Society (FuJo) at Dublin City University. At FuJo, she worked on the EMIF-funded project TeaMLit: Teacher Education in Digital and Media Literacy, Providing Guidance, Resources, and Support for Teacher Trainers in Europe (2023-2024). From 2019 to 2022, she was an Early-Stage Researcher in the JOLT ETN project, Harnessing Digital and Data Technology for Journalism (Grant 765140), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Training Network funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme.
