Biography

Joana Simões started her career as a horse veterinarian in 2011, focusing on equine internal medicine, anesthesia and intensive care. Since 2007 she has been conducting research on severe asthma in horses and laryngeal function, having followed this line of investigation in her PhD. In 2020 she completed her PhD in veterinary sciences, in clinical research by the University of Lisbon. This research focused on better characterizing severe equine asthma and on the development of a staging method based on clinical information and lung function, which could be used in the field. Joana is currently working as an assistant professor of equine clinic at the Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária da Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, acting as coordinator of the equine clinical academic division.
